A Kozuka by Hamano Naotoshi
This Hamano Kozuka depicts Guan Yu, the famed Chinese general of the late Eastern Han dynasty who later became a deified figure in Chinese culture for his loyalty and martial virtue. He is typically shown with a long beard, dignified pose, and symbols of authority and righteousness. In this rendition he is seated on a ceremonial chair at a table, supporting one arm as he rests his hand on his beard, while a scroll lies on the table before him — the scene conveying both contemplation and command.
The kozuka is crafted in shibuichi, with the face of the figure in copper and the hair in shakudo. Highlights on the robe and the crown (or hair-ornament) are finely inlaid in gold, establishing a refined contrast of materials and tones. The reverse is fully signed ‘Kaikudo Naotoshi Kao’ and the piece has been rated “Tokubetsu Hozon,” indicating its status as a particularly special work. Created by an accomplished master of the Hamano school, Hamano Naotoshi, this kozuka presents not only a powerful motif but also superb technique and provenance.
