NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon

The Furukawa school was founded by Kichijiro Genchin who came from the Yoshikawa (吉川) family. By deleting one stroke from the ‘Yoshi’ Kanji he created the name ‘Furukawa’ (古川) which he used for his own school. He studied under Yokoya Somin (sometimes referred to as the founder of Machibori) and followed his workstyle. His son Furukawa Jochin (active around 1750) became the second master of the school. His workmanship resembles that of his father and we can see the distinct Yokoya features still extent.

This Fuchi-Kashira was made in Shibuichi and Katakiribori and we can see very well the influence of the Yokoya school here not only by examining the dynamic in the carved strokes but also by the overall interpretation of the theme. We can see two probably young Shishi roughhousing on the Fuchi. The difference in thickness between the strokes is remarkable, especially when comparing the fine whiskers to the broad outlines. The shibuichi is of an elegant brownish grey color. The Shitedome are made of pure gold.

The piece was attributed by the NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificate to Furukawa Jochin.
