A Kaga Zogan Fuchi Kashira in Musashino design.

Masters from Kaga were famous for their flat golden or multi coloured inlays on Shakudo, Shibuichi, or Copper. This technique is aesthetically very near to ink painting or Sukashi works the designs of which are carried by the contrast between light and dark. On the Kashira the crescent moon or ‘three day moon’ (Mika Tsuki) is shown sinking behind the grasses of the Musashi plains. A theme that evokes the melancholy of a lonely night and the empty battle field. On the Kashira some Suzu Mushi (crickets) are done in the same way producing a beautiful contrast between the night black Shakudo ground and the shiny illuminated gold.

The Musashino theme is connected with the battles of Taira (Fujiwara) and Genji (Minamoto) during the late Heian period which often took place on the planes of Musashi in today’s western Tokyo.

A very elegant and subdued work for a sword grip which dates back to the middle to late Edo period when Kaga Zogan works flourished.

Attributed to Kaga Zogan by the NBTHK Hozon Kanteisho from Heisei Sanjuichi (22nd February 2019).
