This pair of solid gold Menuki by the Ishiguro school shows a bird of prey, probably and eagle, hunting a white heron. We can see the eagle has already folded his wings tightly being ready to strike down, while focusing his target from above. Has the heron not spotted him yet, as he is floating calmly through the air? We do not know how this encounter will end, but we can see a very nice and typical execution of these birds which points us to the Ishiguro school.
The Ishiguro school was founded by Masatsune (1760 – 1828) who studied under Kato Naotsune and his master Yanagawa Naomasa. Soon the school flourished and found its focus on bird motives and floral designs which they produced almost exclusively. Today their works are among the most sought for and most precious items of Japanese sword fittings.
These solid gold Menuki comes with an attribution to the Ishiguro school by the NBTHK Hozon certificate.
