A Tsuba signed and made by Ito Michihisa (道久) who was active in the mid Edo period (1750) in Bushu.
This iron Sukashi Tsuba shows a very classic and charming design of bamboo. The stem of the bamboo forms the rim of the Tsuba from which small branches and leaves point to the inside and naturally carry the Seppa. The flat relief technique used by Michihisa creates a deep three dimensional feeling and the contrast between thin branches and thick leaves gives this Tsuba a well balanced appearance.
The design is exemplary for Michihisa and a very good example of the iron carving skills of the Bushu workshops. Not only is this piece a nice edition to a classical Sukashi Tsuba collection but a good study piece for its nice iron patina and carving technique.
