Tanaka Seiryusai Hidetoshi (Toryusai)

Seiryusai Hidetoshi was a highly skilled craftsman from the late Edo period. According to the Tosogu classroom by ‘Fukushi Shigeo’ he was known for large iron Tsuba decorated with Nunome Zogan which is exactly what we can see here. When we examine closely the edges of the fine gold layer on the front we can see that he must have prepared the surface, not with a cris-cross pattern like normal Nunome Zogan, but with fine chisel strokes which creates the impression of mist at the border where the gold inlays end.

In contrast to the front, the back side must have been prepared in a Keshikomi Zogan technique. The inlaid material of the underlying clouds shows a greyish color, however it is difficult to distinguish which alloy he had used. If it was silver, we would see the silver starting to creep into the iron surface, if it was lead, it would have gathered a whitish oxidation surface. This leads us to believe that a Shibuichi alloy was used which was then highlighted with fine golden waves in Keshikomi Zogan Technique.

It is interesting to note that the design elements on both sides flow into the Hitsu-Gane which speaks for the creativity of the artist. This Tsuba is signed with a rare gold seal signature reading ‘Hidetoshi’.

Seiryusai Hidetoshi was active in the late Edo period around 1850, although his exact dates are unknown, he was a student of the famous Tanaka Kiyotoshi and thus part of the Toryusai group, which is also highlighted on the NBTHK certificate stating ‘Toryusai’ in brackets after his name. He was quite a prolific artist and many beautiful pieces are extant. This large Tsuba is a great example of his work and a great addition to any fine Tosogu collection.
