Ko-Shoami Tsuba with bamboo in snow design from the former collection of Sasano Masayuki.
This is one of the great examples of a perfectly designed tsuba by a master from the Shoami tradition. The bamboo is the central element. Next to it (and only on one side) we can see a tiny pillow of snow. This makes it clear that the whole design refers to the ‘three friends of winter’ theme (pine, plum and bamboo) which had a strong meaning for the samurai who also pursued to prevail under even the hardest circumstances. I can very well understand why Sasano has collected this piece.
From the collections of Sasano Masayuki and Prof. Eckhard Kremers.
