A Higo Tsuba by the Nishigaki school

Dates to the middle Edo period

This iron Tsuba exhibits a very rough plate with strong hammer marks amidst which we can find Katakiri bori waves which seem to curl towards the center. The Hitsu-Ana have been plugged with Shibuichi or maybe even silver the color of which has turned dark grey over the ages. A twisted Shakudo rim which frames the steel plate can often be found in works from the Nishigaki school.

Close to the Seppa Dai we see an open iron layer which gives this piece a truly well aged character. We are left to speculate, whether this was intentionally left by the artist to give this piece the well known Wabi Sabi touch of the Higo aesthetics or if it was due to later deterioration. However, this Tsuba carries the weight and the atmosphere of old times.

Comes with a custom made high quality Kiri wood box.
