Tsuba, Higo Nishigaki, Tomabune

A Tsuba by Nishigaki Kanshiro with the design of Tomabune

The Tomabune is a traditional boat (fune) covered with mat (toma) to protect it from the rain. This motive is quite common in Japanese art and can be seen from other artists. A famous example might be a Byoubu by Okamoto Toyohiko displayed in the Kyoto National Museum.

This iron Sukashi Tsuba was made by the Nishigaki school in Higo. The interpretation of the design is quite relaxed. The large boat covering the lower half is contrasted by a a large opening towards the top. The boat and the mat covering it are highlighted by subtle engravings. We know a similar Tsuba by the first Kanshiro Nishigaki (see ‘Works of Kanshiro Nishigaki’ by Ito Mitsuru p. 167 No. 144) showing the same motive. Due to the different style of engraving we would assume this Tsuba has rather been made by a later master i.e. the second or third. A charming Higo Tsuba with a dark brown patina.

The NBTHK Hozon Kanteisho attributes this Tsuba to Nishigaki.

Comes with a custom made box and the NBTHK certificate.
